By now, you’re probably aware of the massive citywide blackout that happened in Spain and Portugal. As a result, millions of people in the cities of the countries were left affected and without electricity. Not only these, several parts of France were also affected. And as electricity started to return, here’s what happened.
Spain, Portugal & Parts Of France Experience Power Outage
As the power started to return late on Monday, April 28, as revealed by Reuters, life truly came to a halt with public transport, hospitals and essential services being affected by the massive power outage across Spain, Portugal, and even parts of France. The situation was so dire that Spain’s Interior Ministry declared a national emergency. Around 30,000 police were deployed across the country to keep order in the two countries convened emergency cabinet meetings. It’s quite rare that a power outage of this scale happens in Europe, and the cause remains unclear even now, leaving chaos in its wake. For instance, Madrid’s Barajas International Airport, for instance had been hit by the Spain power outage.

Millions Of People Affected & Left Without Electricity
Similarly, in Portugal, trains were stuck in the tunnels or between stations, while people could find them in the metros. Not just Spain and Portugal, people were also affected in France, especially those who were bordering Spain. Shops, restaurants and businesses were left in the dark after the outage. And as you may have guessed, internet services were also impacted. People were quick to share on X how their flights were affected, and nobody was aware of the cause. One such user shared how at the Valencia airport, flights were still operating as usual and hospitals were also working on Generators, but everything else was quite heavily impacted.
