Princess Mikasa Née Yuriko Takagi, Oldest Member Of The Imperial Family, Dies At 101; All About Her Life And Who She Was

Yuriko Takagi, officially referred to as Her Imperial Highness The Princess Mikasa, has unfortunately passed at the age of 101. She had been ailing for quite some time since she had a stroke in March this year, and in the wee hours of November 15, 2024, around 6:32 AM local time, she passed away. She was at the St. Luke’s International Hospital which is located in the Chuo area of Tokyo.

According to an article which was recently published by WION, all three of Princess Mikasa’s sons passed away before her. She was born on June 4, 1923. When she was 18, she was married to her second cousin, once removed, Prince Mikasa.

She had a total of five children, three sons and two daughters. The daughters all married outside the imperial family and gave up their imperial titles as a result. Hence, Princess Mikasa was the oldest member of the imperial family and the last surviving paternal great-aunt by marriage to Emperor Naruhito.

In March 2024, she suffered a stroke after which her health declined significantly. If reports are to go by, she even had trouble eating and drinking water. On November 7, 2024, an examination revealed that her body was failing and function in her heart and kidneys was declining.

Other Important Details About The Life Of This Japanese Royalty

She was educated at the Gakushuin Women’s Academy, a school specifically for the Japanese Nobility. During her lifetime, Princess Mikasa was a health advocate. She had suffered from a number of health conditions herself. She also had a pacemaker for her heart.

During World War II, her husband, Prince Mikasa, was in favour of surrendering. She recalls the time as a period of great tension. Her husband died in 2016 at the age of 100. The country is no doubt grieving the loss of Princess Mikasa. The two daughters that she is survived by visited her prior to her passing.
