Pune commuters have something to celebrate as the Yerwada Metro Station is set to open on August 15 with the Swargate stretch following soon. This station’s opening was initially planned for May but faced delays. The model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections caused work on entry and exit gates to stop. Additionally, concerns from locals about traffic issues led to a redesign of these points.

The Swargate Metro Station is expected to open by September 15. This opening has also faced delays, initially scheduled for March 31, but was postponed due to the same electoral conduct rules. A trial run for this route was completed in February, covering Budhwar Peth and Mandai stations before reaching Swargate. The segment from Civil Court to Swargate marks a crucial milestone. The distances between the stations are: Civil Court to Budhwar Peth (0.85 km), Budhwar Peth to Mandai (1 km), and Mandai to Swargate (1.48 km).
With these developments, phase one of the Pune Metro project is nearing completion. The Vanaz to Ramwadi route is already fully operational. The PCMC to Civil Court route is partially operational, with the final stretch to Swargate still pending. This upcoming opening will significantly enhance the city’s public transport network.

In a related update, work on the PCMC-Nigdi stretch of the Pune Metro has commenced. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) has been awarded the contract for this segment, which includes an elevated viaduct of 4.519 km from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi (Bhakti Shakti). The project, worth ₹339 crore, is expected to be completed in 130 weeks. This new line will feature four stations: Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti.
The new extension line is a major boost for the city’s infrastructure. Chinchwad Station will serve a mix of commercial, residential, industrial, and religious areas, also integrating with the Chinchwad Indian Railway Station. Akurdi Station will cater to residential, educational, and industrial zones. Meanwhile, Nigdi and Bhakti-Shakti Stations will connect residential, entertainment, and religious places, also linking with the city bus depot. This depot connects to semi-urban areas like Dehu, Chikhali, Talegaon, and Vadgaon, improving accessibility for these regions.
As the Pune Metro expands, residents can look forward to more convenient and efficient travel options. The completion of these projects will mark a significant milestone in the city’s development, offering better connectivity and easing traffic congestion.
