Energy drinks are known to be highly caffeinated. Loaded with stimulant compounds, the non-alcoholic drink works to remove tiredness and improve performance. However, the preservatives, processed sugar and high amounts of caffeine can lead to several health issues like insomnia, anxiety, obesity and risks to dental and heart health. To combat the burgeoning popularity of energy drinks in schools across Punjab, the government has announced a blanket ban on the beverage at educational institutions.
Punjab Places Blanket Ban On Energy Drinks
A report by The Indian Express has brought to light the energy drink ban across schools in Punjab. Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh banned the caffeinated drink in schools to protect students from addiction.
During a press conference in Mansa, Dr Balbir Singh spoke about the harmful effects of energy drinks on school-going kids. He stated that the consumption of energy drinks by school children from an early age can lead to addictions or addictive behaviour. To safeguard their future and ensure they stay mentally and physically healthy, the health minister had to announce this ban.
Moreover, the health minister warned that the government shall take strict action against any supplier or vendor selling energy drinks to students in educational institutions. Like drugs, energy drinks tend to cause addictions, especially when consumed by children. This is part of the Punjab government’s ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign. The government has intensified efforts to get rid of the rampant drug trafficking and addiction issue prevalent in the state.

Govt. Puts Measures In Place Ensure Good Quality Food Is Available
Apart from drug and energy drink abuse, the minister also emphasised the government’s focus on food safety. Measures are being taken by authorities to ensure residents consume pure milk, sweets and paneer among other common food items. Punjab government has an eagle-eyed focus on school safety and its anti-drug campaign. These underscore the government’s efforts and concern about the long-term impact of this addictive and unhygienic substance on young school-going children.
