PWD Greenlights ₹183 Crore Six-Lane Flyover To Decongest Delhi’s Outer Ring Road

Delhi is one step closer to smoother travel. The Public Works Department (PWD) has approved a six-lane flyover at the Metcalfe House T-junction near Civil Lines. This ₹183 crore project aims to decongest the Outer Ring Road and improve daily commutes for thousands of residents and travellers.

The Outer Ring Road remains one of Delhi’s most traffic-heavy corridors. It connects major residential, commercial, and industrial zones across the capital. Areas around the Metcalfe House junction often witness massive traffic jams. These are caused by signal delays, merging lanes, and peak-hour rush.

PWD’s plan includes a 680-metre-long flyover that will bypass these congestion points, as reported by Hindustan Times. It will link Civil Lines Metro Station to the Kashmere Gate ISBT corridor. Commuters travelling between North Delhi and East Delhi will see quicker, smoother rides.

Traffic Police officials said the flyover would remove the current bottleneck. It will ease pressure on the existing roads and help vehicles move continuously without signals.

This project is more than just a flyover. PWD also plans to install stormwater drainage systems to reduce monsoon flooding. Road widening and resurfacing are also part of the plan. Streetlights, pedestrian paths, and safety barriers will enhance overall usability.

The department will use pre-fabricated structures wherever possible. This will reduce construction time and inconvenience for daily commuters. Officials aim to complete the project in 18 months.

The flyover will benefit not just Delhiites but also interstate traffic. Vehicles from Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh that enter through the Outer Ring Road will save time and fuel. The project will also support traffic heading to important hubs like ISBT Kashmere Gate, Signature Bridge, and Majnu Ka Tila. These areas see high tourist footfall, especially during peak travel seasons.
