Railways Allocate ₹1,777 Crore For Mumbai Suburban Rail Network Upgrade; Details Inside

Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure is set to get a major boost! Two months after the general budget was announced, the Ministry of Railways has finally announced that it has decided to allocate ₹1,777 crore to improve Mumbai’s suburban rail in 2025-26. ₹1,777 Cr Allocated For Mumbai’s Suburban Rail Network Upgrade

According to the Hindustan Times, Indian Railways has announced the allocation of ₹1,777 crore to upgrade Mumbai’s suburban rail network. On Saturday, Railways announced that the money will be used for the completion of the ongoing and proposed projects on Central and Western Railway.

These projects are part of different phases of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). This is being seen as a major initiative to improve the expansion and capacity enhancement of Mumbai’s suburban railway network. Reports suggest that the Maharashtra government will contribute an equal amount and it will help accelerate the progress of crucial rail projects.

With this upgrade project, Railway authorities aim to ease congestion, improve connectivity, and enhance overall passenger convenience in the city. The ₹1,777 crore budget includes ₹100 crore for MUTP-II, ₹800 crore for MUTP-III, and ₹877 crore for MUTP-IIIA.

As part of the Mumbai suburban rail network upgrade, Railways plans to add 238 AC trains, construct new railway lines, and enhance existing infrastructure. They also plan to upgrade several suburban stations, expand existing lines, and improve connectivity. Authorities also plan to introduce the Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) System.

As per reports, Central Railway has already begun station improvement works under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). They have already upgraded stations like Parel, Chinchpokli, Matunga and Wadala. They have identified a total of 16 stations for major upgrade works across the state.
