Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made a special announcement on Thursday, launching a pilot project introducing washable blanket covers in traditional Rajasthani Sanganeri prints at Jaipur’s Khatipura Railway Station. As per a report by The Times of India, the project will initially roll out in the AC coaches of the Jaipur-Asrava Superfast Express (12981). As part of a broader effort to improve railway services and passenger experience, if this pilot project proves successful, the initiative will be expanded nationwide. The news was also announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on his official X account.
These washable covers are not just pleasing to the eye but also address long-standing passenger concerns about hygiene. Travellers often complain about the cleanliness of shared blankets on trains. Now, every passenger will receive a freshly laundered, printed cover. Additionally, these covers are durable, easy to maintain, and long-lasting.

What Is Sanganeri Print?
The covers are a smart solution to hygiene issues, but what makes the Sanganeri print special? This initiative not only adds practicality but also highlights India’s regional culture through railway linens. For those who might not know, Sanganeri print is a traditional hand-block printing technique from Sanganer, Rajasthan. It features delicate floral and nature-inspired motifs like birds or animals, fine lines, and intricate details, usually printed on white or off-white fabric.
The craft originated in the 16th century and has been a part of the Rajasthani culture ever since. Sanganeri print is quite special; artisans use vegetable dyes to make vibrant hues and intricate designs that reflect centuries-old skill and attention to detail. Plus, hand-carved wooden blocks are used to carefully stamp each pattern on the fabric. We think this technique is truly one-of-a-kind, something even machines can’t replicate.
As per a report by The Economic Times, Indian Railways also plans to introduce prints from other states in the future to showcase India’s diverse textile heritage. We hope this initiative proves successful and passengers soon see regional prints from across India on their blanket covers.
Now you can say goodbye to those boring white blankets and enjoy your journeys with these vibrant Rajasthani Sanganeri print covers! What do you think of this new step by Indian Railways? Do let us know your thoughts!
