On the latest episode of Sunday Brunch with our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, we were joined by the incredibly talented duo, Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. Over a delightful meal and hearty laughs, the two stars opened up about their experience shooting in Banaras, street food adventures, and why the city holds such a special place in their hearts.

Rajkummar Rao Calls Banaras His “Second Home”

Rajkummar Rao, who has shot several films across Uttar Pradesh, confessed that Banaras holds a uniquely magical charm for him. “It’s like my second home now,” he shared, while Wamiqa added that it was her first time staying in the city for an extended period.

Having spent time sitting on the ghats, getting lost in the narrow galis, and simply soaking in the spiritual energy of the city, Rajkummar Rao believes that Banaras has a soul like no other. “There’s something in the air there… You just feel spiritually alive,” he said. And we couldn’t agree more! The aura of Banaras truly stays with you long after you’ve left.

The Magic Of Banaras Food — Rabri, Malaio & More

No trip to Banaras is complete without indulging in its legendary street food. When asked about memorable food discoveries, Rajkummar Rao took us down memory lane to his first visit a decade ago. “I randomly walked into a gali and found a rabri shop… Till today, I haven’t tasted anything like it,” he said with a nostalgic smile. Though he’s never been able to locate that exact place again, the flavour lingers on.

Wamiqa chimed in with her love for Malaio — a delicate, cloud-like dessert made from malai that melts in your mouth. Rajkummar Rao nodded in agreement, adding how soft and airy it feels. “What rabri! What Malaio!” he exclaimed, perfectly summing up Banaras’ culinary magic.

Getting Lost In The Galis Is The Best Part

For Rajkummar Rao, one of the best things about Banaras is getting lost in its labyrinth-like lanes. “All the galis eventually lead to the ghat,” he said. It’s this element of discovery — of turning a random corner and stumbling upon something beautiful — that makes the city so enchanting.

Whether it’s the spiritual vibe, the historic ghats, or its unforgettable food, Rajkummar Rao’s love for Banaras is truly infectious. As he puts it, “Banaras is magic,” and we can’t wait to go back for more!
