Raksha Bandhan celebrates the love between brothers and sisters. Celebrated on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 19 this year. Many stories about this festival illustrate the importance of the bond between siblings.

One of the most famous ones is that of Draupadi and Lord Krishna. As per the Mahabharata, once Lord Krishna cut his finger and was bleeding profusely. Seeing this, Draupadi tore a piece of her saree and bandaged his finger. Touched by her concern, Lord Krishna promised to protect Draupadi in times of need. He made good on his promise when he protected her dignity in the Kaurava court.

Another tale around this festival is about the bond between Yama, the God of Death, and his sister Yamuna, the river. According to legend, moved by the love of his sister, Yama had declared that any brother who was tied a rakhi by his sister and offered to protect her would become immortal.
