Ride-hailing platform Rapido is now eyeing the online food delivery market in India. Rapido is likely to pilot its food delivery services in Bengaluru with significantly lower commission charges soon. Industry experts suggest that Rapido’s entry could shake up the space dominated by established players like Zomato and Swiggy.
Rapido To Enter Food Delivery Market
According to Deccan Herald, to enter the food delivery industry, Rapido has already begun onboarding restaurants for the pilot project. The pilot project is set to launch in Bengaluru starting in July. To support this rollout, Rapido has finalised commercial terms with restaurants through a partnership with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI).
As per reports, the platform is offering a flat commission charge of ₹25 on all orders below ₹400. It will charge ₹50 for orders worth more than ₹400. Basically, Rapido’s commission will lie in the range of 8-15%. This is way lower than the 16-30% commission charged by Swiggy and Zomato. Experts believe that this competitive pricing strategy will attract restaurants and potentially reshape the market dynamics.
To place an order, the customers will simply have to go through the Rapido app, check the restaurant listed, select the desired dishes, make payment, and that’s it. Reports suggest that NRAI, which represents 5 lakh restaurants, has helped Rapido to build its logistics.

Uber & Ola’s Similar Endeavours
It is to be noted that Rapido isn’t the first cab-booking platform to set its sights on India’s online food delivery market. Back in 2015, Ola launched Ola Cafe and even acquired Foodpanda India in 2017. Recently, they made a comeback in the sector by joining the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), aiming to tap into the evolving digital commerce ecosystem.
In 2107, Uber Eats was launched in India by Uber. However, the platform struggled to gain a foothold. It eventually exited the space, selling its food delivery business to Zomato. As part of the deal, Uber acquired a 10% stake in Zomato.
