How expensive is it to live in Bengaluru? Well, amid the rising costs of petrol, food deliveries, milk, diesel, metro tickets and more, living in Bengaluru can burn a hole in one’s pocket. Recently, a Redditor called Bengaluru the costliest in India. He factored in the cost for street food, housing and more to reach his conclusion.
Is Bengaluru India’s Most Expensive City?
A Redditor (Optimal-Animal-90) added a post in the subreddit, r/Bengaluru. In the post, the man ranted about Bengaluru’s high cost of living and compared it to his experiences in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune. He even chimed in on what he has heard from his friends living in metropolitan cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad and beyond.

The overall costly lifestyle of the people in the city, pricey street food and rents that dent pockets, led him to conclude that Bengaluru is the most expensive city to live in India. What triggered him to rant on Reddit was his recent trip to Mumbai where he had to travel to the railway station. He was shocked to know that the auto driver in Mumbai charged him just ₹30 for a 2 km commute. Flabbergasted, he “double confirmed” the fare before getting into the auto. The Redditor even noticed that street food in Mumbai started from just ₹10-₹15.
While travel costs and street food were reasonable in Mumbai, according to him, Ahmedabad offered low rents. In Bengaluru, he argues, “everything is expensive”. From street food to living expenses to commute, everything! A monthly salary of ₹50,000-₹60,000 is impossible to sustain a nuclear family in comparison to other cities.

One person called Mumbai’s street food “another level” when it came to price and portions. Another hailed the city’s metre-run autorickshaws.

Others brought the high prices at restaurants in Delhi and Mumbai to his attention.”The peanuts you save in transport in Mumbai are nothing compared to the rent you pay there,” pointed out another.
