The origins of metro operations in India trace its roots back to decades. Kolkata Metro is the first planned metro to operate in the country. The historical services began on October 24, 1984. Decades later, there are smooth metro operations in many cities with new developmental projects coming up in many areas. But are the construction processes continuing at the same pace? A Redditor indicated the difference between the expansion of the Delhi Metro and the Namma Metro. Let’s find out the major dissimilarities.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation kickstarted the construction work of Delhi Metro long back in 1998. On April 15, 2007, the first section of the Purple Line construction started between Baiyyappanahalli and Mahatma Gandhi Road in Bengaluru. The Redditor asked why Namma metro construction has been so slow in comparison to the national capital. Excluding two years for COVID-19, it has been 15 years of Bengaluru metro development but still, there are only two functional lines presently. “Yellow line is opening up in December 2024 but 15 years for a 3rd line is way too much time,” the post read.

Not one or two but multiple factors and causes are responsible for the slow progress of metro construction in the Karnataka capital. Netizens shared their opinions and thoughts on the ongoing process of establishing a new functional metro line in the city. A major issue highlighted by many is corruption. A Redditor slammed Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and commented “Expecting anything but incompetence and corruption is asking too much from BBMP.”

They have highlighted several noticeable issues leading to this much-talked-about postponement and delay in the entire process of metro development in Bengaluru and new lines. Some of the most common problems mentioned by Netizens are regarding less funding, land acquisition, late release of funding, and bureaucracy.

A Redditor pointed out, “It’s easy to blame corruption (which definitely is one of the issues). However, the main reason is the lack of and delayed release of funds and land acquisition issues.” Another comment read, “BMRC on the other hand is a government body. So subject to usual bureaucracy and political influences and inefficiencies.” Here’s how Reddiotrs are responding.
