The Royal Stay

If the sets of Bajirao-Mastani wowed you, then read on. Because this time we are talking about a heritage property!  Fort Jadhavgadh stands gracefully at the end of Devi Ghats, on the Hadapsar Saswad road in Pune. The monsoons are here and not enough has been said about the beauty of Devi Ghats. Take a look!

Soak Yourself In History (And The Rains)

Built 300 years ago, Fort Jadhavgadh presents itself with pride. Built by Pilaji Jadhavrao in 1710, today, the fort is restored by the Kamat Group of Hotels. Pilaji was in the army of Chhatrapati Shahuji in his war against the Mughals. He took his men across Jadhavgadhi where he trained them the art and craft of sword fighting. He built this fort to prevent attacks from enemy battalions.

Thank God, he did that! Today, it has become a weekend getaway for Mumbaikars and Pune-ites. The darbar-men with their long moustache never fail to make you feel special as they blow the Tutari and play drums to welcome you and your family. With a narrow lobby that leads to the property, the checking-in and checking-out of the hotel is usually chaotic. But once you enter, an old world charm captivates you.

The fort has huge gates, broad staircase, ethnic balconies, not so commonly seen in a modern day hotel. Chajja, is the restaurant where breakfast and lunch are served. High tea can be enjoyed at Aangan, right outside Chajja. And their signature alfresco restaurant Payatha is where everyone gets together for a musical show and traditional Maharashtrian cuisine for dinner.

And all you water babies must dip yourselves in the kund, the swimming pool under the shade of trees. That’s my favourite part of the hotel along with the traditional balcony outside Chajja.

The dungeons, prisons and artifacts look beautiful and have a historic aura to it. The lawns have been beautified leading the way to the tents and cottages outside of the fort.
