We bet you all remember waking up early as kids on January 26 to catch the live coverage of the Republic Day parade. Despite being a holiday, the excitement of watching the stunning tableaux, impressive stunts on bikes, and the final flypast by the Indian Air Force was something unexplainable! And this excitement is something we feel each year. So, as we gear up to celebrate the 76th Republic Day of India, here’s everything you need to know about this important day.
History & Significance Of India’s Republic Day
While India gained independence on August 15, 1947, we did not get our constitution until January 26, 1950. We celebrate Republic Day each year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. Drafted by a constituent assembly led by Dr BR Ambedkar, the Indian Constitution replaced the Government of India Act that was left behind by the Britishers.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the final draft of the Constitution was introduced in the constituent assembly on November 4, 1948. It was on January 26, 1950, that the Constitution was put in force. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first president of India, led the ceremony by unfurling the Indian National Flag, followed by a grand salute of 21 guns to remember the important day. Since then, January 26 has been recognised as the Republic Day of India. The day celebrates the cultural heritage of the country and highlights India’s commitment to democratic ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Chief Guest Of The Grand Event
This year, we are celebrating the 76th Republic Day. Every year, a head of state or government of another country is invited as the chief guest of honour for the celebration in New Delhi. This year the event will be graced by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This will be his first visit to India as the President, after assuming office in October 2024.
