Pictures of an intense sandstorm taking over some cities of Saudi Arabia were scattered across social media. As a result of this massive storm, visibility had been reduced to near zero, which led to people facing a lot of trouble, and they were asked to stay at home. And now, Saudi Arabia has warned the residents of unstable weather for the coming days. The authorities have issued a red alert regarding this.
Red Storm Alert Issued For Saudi Arabia
Safety warnings have already been issued for the residents of Al Qassim province. This comes after the residents witnessed a rare and dramatic phenomenon, which is called the ‘Wall of Dust’. As it engulfed the city on Sunday, May 5, visibility was reduced to near zero! Going by a report of the Gulf News, this phenomenon was attributed to the powerful downdraft from the cumulonimbus clouds. Called a haboob, it is expected that it was most probably fueled by the desert winds. This intense dust storm swept across several regions, leaving behind a dusty atmosphere in its wake.
It was, however, noted that such walls can reach a height of 2000 m! Not to mention, the wind speed can be as high as a hundred kilometres per hour, which can be a major hazard! As a result, the National Centre for Meteorology has issued a Red Alert for five regions in Saudi Arabia. This also includes Riyadh and Eastern Province, where there are warnings of continued storms. It is also expected that there will be heavy rainfall, potential flooding and hail in some regions.

Residents Have Been Asked To Beware
Following the alert, authorities have asked residents to remain indoors. They’ve been asked to avoid open areas and to ensure that they keep their travel limited, especially on highways. Besides, reduced visibility being dangerous for people travelling on the road, it also impacts their health. However, in the same breath, it’s worth mentioning that right now, it poses no immediate threat to the health or the infrastructure.
So, if you’re venturing out in the coming days, you will want to take note on the weather report before you step out.
