Saudi Arabia has made a strong statement about AI and intellectual property. A man was slapped with an SR9,000 fine after he used AI to alter a personal photograph and republish it without the original owner’s permission. According to the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), this is one of the first publicly reported cases in the Kingdom involving AI misuse in a copyright context.

The whole situation kicked off when the original copyright owner filed a complaint. Investigators then dug into the evidence, questioned the individual involved, and, to be fair, gave him a chance to share his side of the story.
A specialised committee then confirmed the violation and handed down the fine. SAIP stressed that using AI doesn’t give anyone a free pass — just because it’s digital or “techy” doesn’t mean it’s exempt from the law.

This case is more than a fine; it’s a warning. AI can be a brilliant tool, but ignoring intellectual property rights comes with consequences.
