A food poisoning incident connected to a restaurant in Riyadh has driven Saudi officials to stop the distribution and recall contaminated mayonnaise. The mayonnaise offered at the restaurant chain was linked to the epidemic of incidents of food illness, according to the Food and Drug Authority.

Saudi Authorities Recall Contaminated Mayonnaise

Following a laboratory study, a sample of “BON TUM” mayonnaise from the previously mentioned eatery tested positive for the botulism-causing Clostridium botulinum bacteria. A food chain restaurant saw one fatality and 75 hospital admissions last week as a result of food poisoning. Six of the 75 cases included foreigners, and 69 of the sick were Saudi nationals. The ministry moved quickly to implement several measures in collaboration with the Food and Drug Authority and other relevant agencies.

Authorities suspended the nationwide distribution of ‘Bon Tum’ mayonnaise. Markets and dining venues throughout all Saudi cities will no longer carry the product. In addition, the mayonnaise production has closed while legal action is pending. The authorities will remove and destroy any remaining product in the plant, regardless of the batch or expiration date. Customers of the factory, restaurants in particular, have been instructed to eliminate this type of mayonnaise they may have on hand.

Regulatory Bodies To Step Up Their Campaigns

Across the nation, regulatory organisations will step up their campaigns of inspection and monitoring. The municipal authorities will conduct campaigns on all food products to ensure consumer safety. The ministry and relevant authorities advise people to trust official sources only. This will prevent the spread of baseless rumours or news. The propagation of precise data proved crucial in countering false information and calming public concerns. Authorities aimed to create an environment of trust and collaboration. And the problems presented by the food poisoning outbreak could be solved by working together.
