We all know that oceans make up a large part of the Earth. But what if we told you that there is a reservoir 700 km below the surface of the Earth that is holding the volume of all the water on the Earth’s surface oceans? Well, that’s true because recently scientists discovered the same and we are here to give you all the details.
Scientists Discover Waterbody 700-Km Below Earth’s Surface
Recently, scientists from Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois discovered a reservoir that is expected to hold triple the volume of water on the Earth’s surface. Yes, in a report by Hindustan Times, it was mentioned that this water reservoir is somewhere around 700 km below the Earth’s surface. This discovery was made in a bid to understand the origin of the Earth’s water. It’s worth mentioning that this enormous ocean in the Earth’s mantle is concealed with a Blue Rock, known as ringwoodite.
It Is Expected To Hold Triple The Volume Of Surface Ocean
As it happens, this latest discovery challenges the notion about where the earth’s water came from, as people tend to believe that it came through comet impacts. As a result, the latest discovery shows that the oceans might have seeped out from the Earth’s core! In case they’re wondering, the researchers took the help of a range of 2000 seismographs across the United States. After this, they analyse seismic waves from over 500 earthquakes. As a result, scientists have assumed that there is the presence of a large quantity of water as waves, which travel through the earth’s inner layers slow down when passing through wet rock.
Now, scientists are more interested than ever in studying seismic data from around the world.
