Veteran sculptor Ram Sutar will be honoured with the Maharashtra Bhushan, the state’s highest civilian honour. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the big announcement in the legislative assembly on Thursday. Ram Sutar designed the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, and has also been the name behind various other famous sculptures in the country. Scroll on to know more about this.

Sculptor Ram Sutar To Get Maharashtra Bhushan Award

Sculptor Ram Sutar, who turned 100 in February, will be honoured with the Maharashtra Bhushan. The award comprises ₹25 lakh and a memento. While making the announcement, CM Devendra Fadnavis said that Sutar’s sculptures bear subtle human emotions that eloquently convey a message to the viewers.

Ram Sutar received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, in 2016. He was also conferred with the Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony in 2016. He is renowned for his mastery of realistic bronze sculptures and has been recognised for the same by various countries and artists from across the globe.

1. Statue of Unity, Gujarat

The 182-metre bronze statue is the world’s tallest statue. It was inaugurated in 2018 and is a larger version of a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel installed at Ahmedabad International Airport.

2. Statue of Prosperity At Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru

The Statue of Prosperity is a statue of the founder and architect of the city of Bengaluru, Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda. It is installed at the Kempegowda International Airport.

3. Mahatma Gandhi Bust

Ram Sutar designed a bust of Mahatma Gandhi that has been so appreciated that it was selected for installation in more than 450 cities all over the world! According to the Deccan Herald, the bust has been installed in cities across France, the USA, Italy, Argentina, Barbados, Russia, England, Malaysia, Germany, Australia, and even China. He also designed the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a seated position that is placed in the Parliament of India. A much larger replica of the same was later installed in Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru.

4. Statue Of Goddess, Madhya Pradesh

He also designed and erected the 45-foot-tall statue of Goddess Chambal at Gandhisagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh.

5. Krishna Arjun Rath at Brahma Sarovar, Haryana

In 2008, sculptor Ram Sutar designed the bronze Krishna Arjun Rath monument at Brahma Sarova in Haryana.
