On Wednesday, Seoul was hit with the most severe November snowstorm in almost 52 years. The streets in the capital of South Korea were blanketed with thick snow that severely impacted travel in the city. Read on to know more.
Seoul Receives Worst Snowstorm In Decades
On Wednesday, Seoul received its worst snowstorm in half a century. According to The Times of India, the city was covered with 20 centimetres of snow. This was way more than the previous November record of 1972 when the city was blanketed in 12 centimetres of snow.

According to the local weather agency, the city’s snowstorm ranged from 20 to 26 centimetres. The effect of this snowstorm wasn’t limited just to Seoul. Reportedly, the central, eastern, and southwestern regions of South Korea also received significant snowfall ranging from 10 to 23 centimetres.

The snowstorm has claimed one life in Gangwon Province. As per reports, a five-vehicle accident in the eastern town of Hongcheon ended up claiming one life and leaving four injured. According to South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety, a man in the town of Yangju was killed after a tent-type garage collapsed.

The snowstorm also caused temporary power outages at about 230 homes in the city of Gwangju, near Seoul.

Flights Grounded And Travel Disrupted In The City
The massive snowstorm has also impacted travel in and around Seoul. According to The Times of India, hundreds of flights have been grounded in Seoul. Around 317 flights were either cancelled or delayed at airports like Incheon International Airport and Gimpo Airport.

The snowfall has also impacted road travel and has also halted 90 ferry operations and the closures of hundreds of hiking trails across the nation. Ferries to the Jeju Islands were also suspended, keeping the weather in mind.

South Korean authorities have deployed snowplows and emergency crews to clear roads and restore transportation systems across the country. More updates on the same are awaited.
