Shefali Shah

When we speak of the best seafood joints in Mumbai, Gajalee is one name we certainly cannot skip. And on this episode of Sunday Brunch, we met the perfect guest to explore the delicious delicacies at this iconic restaurant. Our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, was joined by none other than the graceful and talented Shefali Shah for a delightful brunch filled with dishes like Ambat Tikhat Prawns, Bombil Fry, and a lot more. This brunch was also an opportunity to dive into Shefali’s personal life, her journey to becoming an actress, travel stories, and so much more. Read on to learn all about it!

Shefali Shah Started Doing Theatre As A Kid

Shefali Shah revealed that she is a complete Mumbai girl—born and brought up in the city. Talking about her school days, she instantly admitted she was a horrible student and jokingly added that teachers have used the same phrase on every student since her great-grandfather’s time: “great potential, but doesn’t focus.” She shared that while becoming an actor wasn’t a usual career choice in her family, she was lucky to have extremely supportive parents who never held her back.

However, for the longest time, no one in her family—including herself—realised that acting would become her lifelong career. She began working at an early age and performed her first theatre act at just 10. When we asked her about her first-ever paycheque, she guessed she probably got paid just ₹200 per show and jokingly added that maybe her mom and grandmother just “ate it up.”

She Has An Extremely Erratic Diet

Later in the episode, Shefali shed light on her immense love for food. She revealed that for the longest time, she felt guilty about eating—but not anymore. Now, she thoroughly enjoys her meals. When Kamiya asked if she eats three meals a day, Shefali Shah revealed that her diet at home is quite erratic—especially when she’s not on set—and is something nobody should follow. Most days, she ends up having just one meal at dinner. She’s stopped having tea and coffee now, but earlier, she would survive the day on tea, coffee, Diet Coke, and chaas, before finally having dinner.

Naturally, we wanted to know the reason behind such a brutal diet. Was it a conscious decision to lose weight or something else? Shefali shared that it wasn’t intentional—there was no specific reason behind it. She just always felt too lazy to eat alone and didn’t see the point in preparing a meal just for herself.

In this episode, Shefali also opened up about the impactful characters she has played throughout her career. To learn more, watch the full episode on the Curly Tales YouTube channel.
