Taking to his official account on X, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a major announcement today. Yes, as of today, July 18 will now be celebrated as the Union Pledge Day. This is a significant date and it commemorates the historic moment that set the stage for the official establishment of this nation on December 2, 1971. Here’s why July 18 is important and special in the history of the United Arab Emirates.

As mentioned in the post by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the UAE, July 18 will now be designated as the Union Pledge Day. It is on this day that the founding father of the UAE, along with his fellow rulers, signed the declaration of the union back in the year 1971. Together with his brothers, signed a declaration of the union and, as a result, the UAE Constitution. This led to the announcement of the name of the country, the United Arab Emirates.

Why Is This Day Important?

As it happens, in a report by Gulf News, it was revealed that Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is the Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, emphasised that this day is a historic milestone. Yes, he mentions how the Union Day marks the inception of the journey of the nation towards unity and solidarity. A tribute to the journey of this successful union, this is indeed a historic date.
In case you weren’t aware, before this unification, each of the seven emirates was an independent princely state.

As the British departed, this unification took place and the UAE was formed. And since 53 years, the UAE has been made up of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
