Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, also the transport minister, recently presided over a symposium organised by RTDC. The symposium outlined a comprehensive framework for the ropeway project. As per reports by Hindustan Times, Agnihotri emphasised the project’s potential to significantly reduce road congestion in Shimla for the next four decades. The project promises a sustainable and efficient transportation solution, addressing the city’s pressing traffic issues.

As per a report by Hindustan Times, engineer Ajay Sharma, Director of the RTDC, highlighted the eco-friendly nature of the project. He mentioned that the project was a significant milestone in improving Shimla’s transport infrastructure. Sharma assured that modern technology would be used to minimize ecological impact. This will enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The urban ropeway system offers numerous benefits, including reduced air and noise pollution, fewer accidents, and better connectivity across the city.

The ropeway network will be the largest in India and the second-largest globally, following the La Paz network in Bolivia. The project has been strategically positioned as an Externally Aided Project (EAP) to secure 80% of its funding from multinational banks. This financing model reflects RTDC’s commitment to leveraging international expertise and resources.

The project will use Mono Cable Detachable Gondola (MDG) technology, known for its safety and efficiency. The system will have a capacity of 3,000 persons per hour per direction (PPHD). It will complement existing transport infrastructure, providing seamless first and last-mile connectivity in Shimla. The project will bring significant socio-economic benefits, including job creation and enhanced tourism. It is expected to be completed by 2025.
