The Centre has been actively working to bridge the air connectivity gap in far-flung and mountainous states. During a session in the Lok Sabha, the aviation minister mentioned several states, including Sikkim, where new airports are being considered.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently revealed that plans are underway to explore airport development in the state.

Currently, Sikkim has only one functional airport — Pakyong — which has faced several operational challenges due to its location and weather conditions. Flights often get cancelled or delayed, affecting the travel plans of tourists and locals.

The proposed new airport in Sikkim is expected to resolve these issues and provide a more reliable entry point to the state. The initiative also aligns with the government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which promotes affordable regional air travel.

Better Access Could Boost Tourism And Local Economy

Sikkim remains a popular destination for both domestic and international travellers. However, poor connectivity and difficult terrain often discourage tourism, especially during the monsoon and winter seasons. With the development of a new airport in Sikkim, the state could become more accessible throughout the year.

The proposed airport will likely open doors to seamless travel to destinations like Gangtok, Yumthang Valley, and Tsomgo Lake. More accessible routes can increase hotel stays, transport bookings, and local business opportunities, directly supporting the region’s economy.

As reported by Hindustan Times, this plan not only aims to improve convenience for travellers but also to boost employment and infrastructure growth in the region.

Regional Development Gets A Push Under UDAN

The development of a Sikkim new airport also reflects the Centre’s strategic focus on North East India. Under the UDAN scheme, many underserved regions have received better air links in recent years. Sikkim’s inclusion in this expansion demonstrates the state’s growing importance in India’s tourism map.

If implemented, the new airport would reduce dependency on neighbouring states for air travel and create a direct gateway to Sikkim’s heart. Travellers, local stakeholders, and tourism operators are looking forward to better infrastructure that could transform the state’s travel experience.
