Who would not jump at the idea of witnessing the Aurora Borealis AKA the Northern Lights in real life? The vibrant waves of green, pink, and scarlet dancing across the sky and leaving onlookers speechless with breathtaking sights! While many of us wish to experience this magic in person, the dent it could put on our savings makes us all a little hesitant. However, did you know that there is a village in Russia where you can witness the Northern Lights at almost half the price of Norway, Finland or Iceland? Intrigued? Scroll on to know more.
Experience Northern Lights At Teriberka, Last Village On Earth
Travel blogger Atlas Explorer (@the.atlas.explorer) recently took to Instagram to talk about Teriberka in Russia, the Last Village On Earth. It is called so because the village is located on the Barents Sea, near the Arctic Ocean, which is actually an ‘end of the earth’ sort-of location.
Nestled in the Kolsky District of Murmansk Oblast, this place is about 10 hours away from Lapland, Finland. In the post, Atlas Explorer mentioned that you can witness the Northern Lights in Teriberka for almost half the price, as compared to any other European nation. She called it the “Cheapest and the best place for Indians to view the Northern Lights.”
She also mentioned that Indians can get an easy e-visa within 15 days in Russia, making it even more convenient for travellers. The post mentioned that you can live in a glass igloo in Teriberka for about ₹8,000/night, and even take a Northern Light hunting tour for ₹6,000. Atlas Explorer also shared that international cards don’t work in the area, so it’s best to carry paper currency like the US dollar.
3-Day Itinerary For Murmansk
Now, if you’re all excited to visit Russia’s Teriberka to experience the Northern Lights, then Atlas Explorer revealed that you can plan a three-day trip to Murmansk for about ₹75,000-₹90,000. The flight from India to Murmansk (via Moscow) will cost you about ₹40,000–₹50,000. She also gave a complete three-day itinerary for Murmansk –
Day 1: Arrive in Murmansk and check into a hotel. Explore the Alyosha Monument, city center, and Lenin Icebreaker Museum. End the day with a Northern Lights tour.
Day 2: The next day, you can visit a husky/reindeer farm and try sledging, and also check out the Sami village experience (optional). In the afternoon, try snowmobiling a traditional Russian banya.
