Somnath Temple Replaces Plastic Prasad Boxes With Eco-Friendly Packs; Here’s What Makes Them Special

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the Somnath Temple is a famous temple located in Gujarat. The temple has now officially launched new eco-friendly prasad boxes to completely replace its old plastic containers. This move aims to reduce plastic usage and promote the reuse of boxes.

Somnath Temple Launches Eco-Friendly Prasad Boxes 

Devotees visiting Somnath Temple in Gujarat will now get their prasad in a cardboard or metal box instead of plastic packaging. According to The Times of India, the initiative was undertaken by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and Shree Somnath Trust in partnership with NID. It aims to reduce the plastic waste discarded by devotees after consuming the prasad.

The metal packaging, which is developed for the premium takeaway category, will be durable and can be reused as well. But here’s the most interesting part. The new prasad boxes at the Somnath Temple are not your usual boxes with a standard design.

The look of the boxes uses traditional colours inspired by haldi (turmeric) and kumkum (vermillion). Additionally, the boxes also feature beautiful artwork inspired by Lord Shiva, Nandi and Bel leaves.

New Prasad Boxes Promote Reuse & Sustainability

The new prasad packaging, designed by a team from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, was launched by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently. Moreover, the new pack also sends the message of reducing plastic usage and helping the environment. According to The Times of India, the move could help cut the thousands of kilograms of plastic waste generated through the existing packaging.

The Somnath Temple in Gujarat attracts millions of Lord Shiva devotees every year. People believe that praying here removes bad luck and brings happiness to their lives. The temple is located right on the coast of the Arabian Sea, which makes it feel even more peaceful. Devotees can hear the sound of ocean waves crashing against the temple walls while they pray.
