The first-phase of Kolkata Metro’s Yellow Line extension, the Noapara-Barasat Corridor is almost ready. Within a couple of months, officials expect the launch of this metro phase. So, this means you can reach the Kolkata Airport in a faster and budget-friendly manner. Here’s more to it.

Kolkata Metro’s Noapara-Barasat Corridor Phase 1 Almost Complete

The 6.2km stretch of the Noapara-Barasat Corridor connects 4 key stations. They are Dum Dum Cantt, Jessore Road, Noapara and Jai Hind Biman Bandar (Airport) stations. As per a report by The Indian Express, the Jessore Road station’s underground section integrates the airport seamlessly into Kolkata’s iconic Metro network. A senior engineer revealed to The Indian Express that it’s just the first phase of the 16 km-long Noapara-Barasat Corridor.

Constructing the first phase of the Noapara-Barasat Corridor in Kolkata was a tiresome task as the project faced many challenges. The strigent height restriction was a major engineering hurdle as certain machinery couldn’t be deployed due to this restriction. Yet, these challenges were overcome by Kolkata Metro, and the first phase is now close to completion.

Jai Hind Metro Station Connects Suburbs To The Airport

Kolkata’s Jai Hind Metro Station has a slew of features that will make it the most prominent metro station in Kolkata. Here’s why:

  • Spans across multiple levels– platform, ground and undercroft.
  • Built in a manner that it can handle a large volume of passengers.
  • It will have five platforms, the maximum across India.
  • Platform 1 will be a side platform.
  • Platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5 to form an island platform.
  • The station will have six stairs and lifts each and 12 escalators.
  • Features two drinking water booths, two paid toilet complexes. Both have amenities for the differently-abled
  • The design includes an underground station for airport access.
  • Travellers from north suburban areas can commute to and from the metro directly from Kolkata Airport.
  • The city will be connected to the Jai Hind Metro via the Noapara and DumDum junctions.
