The much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport is slated to start passenger flights in April of next year. Ahead of this, Minister of Road Transport & Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari has proposed 10,000 water taxis to ferry passengers from Mumbai’s distant suburbs to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Water Taxis To Connect Mumbai Suburbs & Navi Mumbai Airport

On Tuesday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that he has proposed introducing 10,000 water taxis to ease transportation between Mumbai’s suburbs to the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport. According to The Financial Express, he has already discussed the idea with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

These water taxis will help boost connectivity and also reduce travel time. As per reports, the mooted taxi will ferry people from suburbs like Vasai and Virar, located along the Arabian Sea, and Kalyan-Dombivali on the northeast along the Thane Creek, to the new airport in just 70 minutes. By road, it can easily take people around three and a half hours to get to the airport from Virar, almost three hours from Vasai, and one and a half hours from Kalyan and Dombivali.

Nitin Gadkari spoke about these water taxis while addressing the International Conference and Exhibition on Reinforced Plastics (ICERP) in Mumbai. He said that these water taxis will be operated from all sides of Mumbai. It connect them with the new airport in just 70 minutes. He mentioned that he is already in talks with the Chief Minister about the same and thinks the city needs 10,000 water taxis.

These water taxis running between Mumbai suburbs and Navi Mumbai Airport will be special. As per Nitin Gadkari’s vision, all 10,000 water taxis can be built using the futuristic fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) material. This material has a lot of relevance in the shipping industry and that’s why he has urged concerned companies to reduce the cost of the material as well.
