The UAE and Jordan have embarked on a game-changing partnership that promises to reshape the future of regional transportation. In a bold move to strengthen ties and boost economic growth, the two nations have signed a landmark agreement to develop a 360-kilometre railway network that will link Jordan’s rich phosphate and potash mines to the bustling Port of Aqaba.

From Jordan To Aqaba, New 360-Kilometre Railway Network

As part of the collaboration, Etihad Rail, the developer of the UAE National Railway Network, has struck a deal with the Jordanian Ministry of Transport. The agreement focuses on building, developing, and operating a 360-kilometre railway network in Jordan to the Port of Aqaba. In addition, Etihad Rail has also signed two more agreements with Jordan Phosphate Mines Company and Arab Potash Company. These deals ensure the transport of 16 million tonnes of phosphate and potash annually to the Port of Aqaba.

Etihad Rail already connects the UAE’s industrial and commercial hubs with 11 terminals. These include major ports like Jebel Ali, Khalifa, and Ruwais, making it a leader in railway development. Therefore, this strategic railway project promises to transform the transportation of vital materials. Furthermore, it will boost export capabilities, improve logistics, and create jobs in both the transport and mining sectors. This in addition will have a significant economic impact on Jordan.

Railway Expected To Operate From 2030

In addition, loading and unloading terminals will be constructed in Aqaba, Ghor Al Safi, and Shidiya. These facilities will streamline the handling and export of minerals, making logistics more efficient. The project also includes plans for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the railway network.

The railway is expected to start operations by 2030. Detailed studies on the railway tracks and mineral handling requirements will be completed by the end of 2025. Moreover, construction bids will be issued in early 2026. The railway will run from the phosphate port and industrial port in Aqaba, extend north to Wadi Al-Yatam, and reach Shidiya. In addition to this, a second route will branch west from Wadi Al-Yatam to Ghor Al-Safi via Wadi Araba.

As Jordan and the UAE join forces to launch this groundbreaking railway project, the region stands on the brink of a transformative era. By 2030, the new network will fuel economic growth, enhance export capabilities, and solidify Jordan’s position as a key player in global logistics.
