Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, disclosed that the Cape Town delegation is negotiating with Air India to open direct flight routes from Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, he said that these negotiations would aim at bringing new investors and tourists to Cape Town.

The delegation is also meeting with tour operators in India to market their Trusted Tour Operators’ Scheme, allowing tourists to apply for visas through approved agencies. The scheme is intended to facilitate travel and attract more tourists to experience Cape Town’s beautiful scenery and business potential.

Outside the airline sector, the delegation met Karnataka IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge to consider collaborations in marine manufacturing, technology, and business process outsourcing (BPO). Financial services and tourism were also the subjects of discussions on possible partnerships.

Kharge recommended adding Cape Town to Bengaluru’s Global Innovation Programme. He also commended Bengaluru-based firm MoveInSync, whose office commute solutions are being adopted in Cape Town.

On their visit, the Cape Town delegation also provided information on how the city resolved its acute water crisis, which reached its peak in 2017. Their approach involved replacing hundreds of kilometres of pipes, drilling aquifers, and enforcing conservation measures.

These efforts may provide useful lessons for Indian cities struggling with water management issues. With talks of direct Bengaluru-Cape Town flights on the go, this is an opportunity which will open new avenues of tourism, trade, and innovation.

If the project is successful, it will go far in deepening India-South Africa relations and opening growth possibilities for both nations.
