Southwest Airlines, known for its popular “bags fly free” policy, will officially end its free baggage allowance for passengers starting 28 May 2025. The airline will now charge for checked luggage, aligning itself with most major US carriers. This move is expected to impact millions of flyers who have long favoured the airline for its no-frills, budget-friendly travel experience.

According to a report by Mint, Southwest Airlines will charge $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second. These charges will apply to all travellers who purchase tickets from 28 May onwards, regardless of their travel date. Passengers who previously enjoyed the cost-saving benefit of two free checked bags will now have to factor in these extra fees.

However, the airline confirmed that A-List Preferred members and Business Select fare holders will remain exempt from the new charges. These passengers will still receive two free checked bags. A-List members and Southwest credit card holders will be allowed one free checked bag under the updated policy.

Southwest Airlines stated that these changes form part of a broader strategy to enhance revenue while continuing to offer competitive pricing. The updated policy puts Southwest in line with competitors such as Delta, United, and American Airlines, who already charge for checked baggage.

Introduction Of Basic Fare Class

In addition to the baggage fee update, Southwest will roll out a new ‘Basic’ fare class, replacing its existing “Wanna Get Away” fare. As reported by Mint, this basic-fare will come with added restrictions. Passengers purchasing these tickets will no longer receive advance seat selection and will only receive a six-month credit for cancelled flights, instead of the 12-month window offered with other fare types.

This shift mirrors similar offerings from other low-cost and full-service airlines that aim to lure price-sensitive travellers while monetising ancillary services like baggage and seat selection.

How Travellers Can Prepare

Passengers flying with Southwest after 28 May 2025 should carefully review their fare category and luggage needs before booking. Travellers who frequently check bags may want to consider fare upgrades or airline credit cards that offer free baggage benefits.

Those sticking with the Basic fare should travel light to avoid the added costs or explore other airlines that might still offer better value, depending on travel routes and dates.
