As winter and 2025 approach, people are eager to take vacations abroad, with Spain being a popular destination for travellers. Spain is expected to be one of the most trending locations for a winter holiday. Spain’s airline operators predict a 12% increase in winter seat sales this year. The nation’s airline industry group, the Association of Airlines In Spain (ALA), believes this can also be due to travellers avoiding conflict zones.
Why Do Spain’s Airline Operators Expect An Increase In Sales?
In a recent press conference in Madrid, ALA President Javier Gandara announced that some airlines will increase flights to tourist destinations like the Canary Islands due to re-routes from Israel and other Middle Eastern destinations.
The winter has seen numerous changes in airline schedules, largely due to the Middle East conflict, with Spain implementing additional schedules.
The ALA estimates that through March, sales of 137 million seats are predicted, an increase from the 134 million predicted by Spanish airport operator Aena in August, before the Middle East conflict.
Till now, Spain has recorded 64.3 million foreign tourists from January to August, an 11% rise from 2023, indicating potential for another record year in visitor numbers. This potential comes despite local discontent over the impact of tourism in certain hotspots.
Southern European airports are expected to surpass northern ones in traffic volume this year, with southern terminals attracting more leisure travellers. While northern destinations focus on business passengers, according to analysts.
