People may feel the cold, icy gusts and shivers running through their bodies as winter approaches its zenith. The mountainous areas, meanwhile, are seeing the worst of winter. According to the Meteorological Department, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, saw the coldest night of the year on December 9, with a low temperature of -5.4°C. It was warmer than its previous record of -5.5°C.
The Temperature Drops In Other Parts Of Srinagar
Even lower temperatures and freezing conditions were observed in the Kashmir Valley and other places. With a temperature of -9.7°C, Sonamarg wins the title of coldest spot, followed by Shopian at -8.5°C and Pahalgam at -8.4°C, as reported by Republic.
Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, Ganderbal, and Kupwara all experienced notable lows. Temperatures in the Jammu region were higher but still rather cold; low temperatures were recorded in Jammu city (5.4°C), Katra (5.6°C), Padder (-7.7°C), Bhaderwah (-3.4°C), and Samba (0.3°C).
The neighbouring Union Territory Ladakh area continued to be one of the coldest, with Leh chilling at -13.2°C and Kargil coming in second at -12.4°C. It is expected that the Kashmir Valley will have highs of 4°C during the day and lows of about -6°C at night.
Winter In Srinagar
