St. Mary’s Basilica Feast, Bengaluru: Alcohol Banned In Some Areas & Traffic Restrictions Issued; Check Advisory

St. Mary's Basilica Feast Bengaluru

On Sunday, September 8, some areas of Central and East Bengaluru will face restrictions in selling and consuming liquor, while there will also be restrictions to traffic flow. These are normally conducted during the feast at St. Mary’s Basilica in Bengaluru, during which pilgrimages flock in large numbers. In order to ensure order and safety during the event, the authorities have had to erect some temporary measures pertaining to traffic and the sale of alcohol.

A circular has been prepared to stop the sale of alcohol within the precinct of Shivajinagar, Commercial Street, and Bharatinagar police station circles. The activities of this ban affect liquor shops, bars, restaurants, and other outlets. The decision is made to enhance the safety of people and avoid any inconvenience during holidays associated with worshipping different religious deities.

Among the most important events of the day is the procession of the chariot of Arogya Mata. This massive annual fete will start from St. Mary’s Church, passing through MK Street, Shivaji Road, Broadway Road, Russell Market, and Noronha Road. It is anticipated that more than ninety parties will participate in the processions. Therefore, the authorities have put up barriers to regulate the population density and traffic jams.

In this case, several roads, which will facilitate the movement of the chariot and ease the restriction of mechanised traffic, will be closed. Some of them are Broadway Road to Russell Market, Dharmaraja Koil Street to Russell Market, and BRV Circle to the Shivajinagar bus stand. Motorists are advised to avoid congested areas such as Shinjuku Running, Kagurazaka Running, and Ochanomizu Running; instead, they should consider other roads, including Queens Road, Infantry Road, and Thimmaiah Road.

Besides the feast of St. Mary’s Basilica, traffic changes have also been made for the Ganesh immersion at Halasuru Lake Kalyani. These changes will be in place from 7 to 9 September. Temporary traffic diversions include two-way adjustments on Kensington Road and Annaswamy Modaliyar Road, while some roads will function as one-way only during the event. The Pulakeshinagar Traffic Police will oversee these changes to ensure a smooth procession.
