The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that cars will have to undergo three crash tests, and based on their performance, they will be given star ratings. With cars with high ratings, the number of deaths in road accidents will surely reduce, as per an official.

According to the notification released last week, the “Bharat New Car Assessment Programme” (Bharat-NCAP) will be applicable to cars of category M1 with a gross weight less than 3.5 tonnes.

The M1 category contains motor vehicles with little more than eight seats total, including the driver’s seat, that are used to transport passengers.

The programme’s goal is to offer a fair, accurate, and unbiased evaluation of the collision safety capabilities of automobiles based on accepted laboratory testing. It offers instructions and communication channels for informing consumers about the evaluation.

A Voluntary Programme

“Bharat New Car Assessment Programme” (Bharat-NCAP) will be a voluntary programme.

The Bharat-NCAP will grade the new car differently for adult and child occupant protection according to three main parameters. How well it performed in full vehicle crash tests, the score it received, and whether or not safety assist technologies were installed.

The overall evaluation is based on how well the vehicle model performs in three categories. Safety assist technologies, adult and child occupant protection, and child occupant protection. There are specific tests and evaluations for each of the assessment areas.

The policy outlines the three crash tests that must be completed on the new vehicle. This will get the car its star rating. These tests include the Side Impact Test, Pole Side Impact Test, and Offset Deformable Barrier Frontal Impact Test. (As per News18)
