Storm Kathleen, a severe storm, has been hammering the United Kingdom and Ireland since April 6, Saturday. It has caused significant disruption throughout the two countries with power outages in the latter and significant flight disruptions in the former. If reports are to go by, as many as 70 flights have been cancelled owing to the storm. Videos of planes struggling to land amid strong gusts of wind have also surfaced on the Internet.

Storm Kathleen: Flight Operations Hit As Planes Struggle To Land

According to an article which was recently published by Republic, the storm is named by the Irish Meteorological Service. As per the article, it is the 11th named storm of the 2023-2024 season. In the UK, the storms severely impacted the air travel.

Major airports like Heathrow and Manchester have been impacted by the storm. In addition to UK airports, airports in Ireland have also been affected. Belfast City Airport is one of the Irish airports that has been severely affected.

As per a statement by EasyJet cited in the Republic article, some flights between Belfast International Airport and Isle of Man have not been able to operate owing to the ongoing storm. A number of flights from the Heathrow airport have been cancelled.

Power Outages Caused Throughout Ireland And Other Impacts

Apart from the impact on the aviation industry, electricity in Ireland has been impacted. A number of areas in the country are witnessing power outages and many homes are left without electricity. As many as 34,000 homes, farms, and businesses are left without electricity.

Many airline companies are trying their best to minimise the impact on scheduled flights. However, the strong gusts of winds are making it hard for pilots to land planes safely. A number of videos have gone viral on X (formerly known as Twitter) that showed planes struggling and failing to land at airports.
