After days of uncertainty, Indian students stranded in Iran have finally begun to be evacuated from Tehran. The first group, consisting of students from different universities, is heading to Qom—a comparatively safer city in the country designated by Indian authorities. More than 1,500 Indian students are stuck in Iran right now and Indian authorities haven’t been able to evacuate them immediately because of airspace closure. They are now looking for “other feasible options” to get the students out of Iran.
MEA Confirms Indian Students In Iran Are Being Moved To Safer Places
Many Indian students, primarily from Jammu and Kashmir, opt to study in Iran due to its affordable medical education. However, due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran right now, they are now under constant anxiety. The Indian government and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have reassured the Indian students that they are looking for ways to safely evacuate them from Iran now.
According to an NDTV report, in response to India’s request for the safe evacuation of its students and citizens, Iran has assured cooperation. Tehran confirmed that while Iranian airspace remains closed, all land borders are open to facilitate the safe movement and evacuation of Indian civilians. As part of this development, many Indian students were moved to safer zones within Iran.
“The Indian Embassy in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation and engaging Indian students in Iran to ensure their safety. In some cases, students are being relocated with the Embassy’s facilitation to safer places within Iran. Other feasible options are also under examination,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
