Super Typhoon Yagi: 14 Dead, Over 100 Injured; Widespread Destruction Caused Across Vietnam And China

Super Typhoon Yagi

Super Typhoon Yagi, supposed to be this year’s strongest storm in Asia, has ravaged through the northern region of Vietnam, disfranchising and decimating several provinces. As of Sunday, 14 people have been reported dead due to the storm, and four of them belonged to the Quang Ninh province in Vietnam, while one was in Hai Duong, near Hanoi.

Super Typhoon Yagi

It hit Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces at about 7 am Saturday, releasing winds of up to 203 kilometres per hour or 126 miles per hour. Winds in Yagi have reached destructive force, wherein structures, automobiles, and other establishments have sustained major destruction. Falling trees and flying debris fused most parts of the power system.

The damage is extensive. This has been aggravated by heavy floods—that is, more than twenty centimetres in the region since the storm erupted. Due to the disaster, around 50000 people have been relocated from coastal areas of Vietnam. Hanoi schools and other educational institutions in 12 provinces of the North are closed in order to prevent the spread of the virus. The Vietnamese government has called on people to avoid going out in order to reduce exposure to such a risk.

Four Airports Shut Down

The tropical storm Yagi that knocked out power has affected Hai Phong city with its population of two million people. This has led to the shutdown of four large airports in the northern region, further compounding problems of transportation. The effects of the storm have also been reported in many regions of northern Vietnam, with authorities trying to establish the major losses incurred.

Typhoon Yagi first hit the island of Hainan on Friday, then proceeded to Vietnam. Getting the exact number has been difficult. Sources show at least four deaths in Hainan with close to 100 injuries. Power has stayed off for several days, and most families are without electricity, which translates to about 83,000 households affected. It has been greatly affected by the report of structural damages, whereby windows of the buildings have been torn off and the water level has inflated in the island.

In the Philippines, where Yagi first developed, the storm has so far killed at least 20 people, while 22 people are still reported missing. As a result of the typhoon, there was a flood and landslides, which caused thousands of people to be relocated to other areas.

As of Sunday evening, it has been downgraded to a tropical depression. However, its impact goes on, posing threats such as floods and landslides mainly in the north of Vietnam. Even the preliminary stages of the storm have been attributed to grave flooding within the areas, especially of the emergency services.
