On April 9, the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and parts of Tamil Nadu celebrated Ugadi, a festival marking the beginning of the year as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Swiggy Instamart also contributed to making the festival memorable for its customers in Bengaluru. The online grocery portal sent free ingredients and a recipe to prepare Pachadi — a festive beverage offered to the Gods, underlying the significance of the special day.

Ordered some stuff on Swiggy Instamart, and they sent the ingredients of Ugadi Pachadi for free. As an immigrant not familiar with the culture, I still decided to give it a try.

A Redditor @_yuyutsu_ho shared a picture of a box —on the sub-Reddit r/bangalore— which arrived with the grocery items ordered on Swiggy Instamart. The box contained thin slices of raw mango, jaggery cubes, neem flowers, tamarind and a tiny ziplock of chilli powder. Placed on the side was a concisely written recipe for Ugadi Pachadi.

A simple 3-step recipe, curated by Vaishali Negi needed to be followed to prepare this festive delight. There was also a QR code provided for the video recipe. The manual instructed the customer to prepare this concoction and offer it as naivedyam (offering to the Gods) and later enjoy it with friends and family.

It was heartwarming to see Swiggy Instamart not only go the extra mile to make the new year special for its customers but also introduce the intricacies of Ugadi to Bengaluru residents who are unfamiliar with it.
