This Tea Stall In West Bengal Runs On The Pillars Of Tradition And Trust

Aradhana Chatterjee is a Kolkata-based digital creator. She is known for creating docu-stories on social media about inspirational humans and unique things she sees around the world. In her latest post on Instagram, she shared the story of a little tea stall in Serampore, West Bengal. This hole-in-the-wall tea shop was started by Naresh Chandra Shome more than 100 years ago. Shome used to work at Brooke Bond tea company and was a freedom fighter.

What is unique about this tea stall is that the customers don’t just drink tea but they also take turns to make tea, pour, and serve it themselves! In short, this tea stall is run by its customers! The shopkeeper isn’t present at the shop at all times, so the customers take charge of everything.

After drinking their tea, the customers leave their payments in the cashbox, even when no one is watching! No one steals or leaves the shop without paying and it runs smoothly on the pillars of tradition and trust. The place truly takes self-service to a whole new level. It is located opposite Chatra Kali Babu Crematorium, in Serampore, West Bengal.
