Cloudbust In Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram Trigger Torrential Rains
Southern Tamil Nadu received torrential rainfall on Wednesday after a cloudburst. As per The Times of India, the relentless rain ended up causing waterlogging across various areas in Ramanathapuram. Several fishermen settlements in Pamban, Chinnapalam, and Muthumuni were flooded because of the continuous downpour. Around ten boats anchored at Mandapam were destroyed, following the heavy rainfall.
According to reports, the rainfall was intensified by “upper air circulation over the Comorin area and a weather system over the Arabian Sea”. This triggered vigorous Northeast monsoon rain in the region. The cloudburst was caused by strong cloud formations and downpours exceeding 10 cm/hour over a limited area.
The cloudburst caused unprecedented rainfall of 411 mm in just 10 hours in Rameswaram, the highest in the last 125 years! In Pamban, nearly 280mm of rainfall was recorded within three hours on Wednesday afternoon. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai confirmed that Thangachimadam recorded 322mm of rainfall.
