No one has to tell Mumbaikars that the heat in Mumbai is scorching. Part of the reason for the sweltering heat is urban concretisation. Urban concretisation is the development and replacement of concrete jungles instead of natural ones. Mumbai has witnessed massive facelifts and constructions in the recent past. This has raised its temperatures more than ever. In order to curb the rising temperature, Mumbai has to spend double of what New York does.
Mumbai To Spend Double Than New York To Curb Heat
According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, island cities across the world, including Mumbai experience Urban Heat Island or UHI effect. This increase in heat results from man-made structures.
A case study by Moody RMS, which is an international risk management company, was cited in the article. As per the study, Mumbai has demonstrated a 126 per cent year-on-year increase in risk mitigation costs.
The reason for this increase is the heightened urban heat stress resulting from an increase in construction. What is more, the result is even worse when considering a higher-emissions scenario. In such a scenario, by the year 2050, the study shows a whopping 166 per cent increase.

A Result Of Urban Concretisation, Says Study
Compare this to New York. It shows only an 82 per cent increase in cost for mitigation of risks. There is also a difference when examining suburban locations where the density of urban concretisation is less as opposed to the centre of the city where the density is high.
Urban areas like Mumbai have high heat density owing to high rises which restrict air circulation. In addition to this, direct heat emissions from human activities, which are higher in urban areas, also contribute to the rising temperature.
