India’s railway network is an integral part of the country’s transport system. With over 8,000 stations across the country, it offers a wide range of connectivity for the travellers. Now, the network is expanding even more as four districts in Jharkhand—Gumla, Khunti, Simdega, and Chatra—are all set to get railway connectivity for the first time since India’s independence. This long-awaited move marks a significant milestone.
Jharkhand’s Four Districts To Get Rail Connectivity After 75 Years
These districts in Jharkhand have lacked the convenience of railway connectivity for decades. The locals here relied heavily on road transportation to travel to major towns and cities. Naturally, the addition of these rail links for these districts under the Ranchi division of Railways will certainly transform the region’s connectivity, economy, and overall development.
According to the India Today reports, the project has already seen crucial groundwork completed. The Jharkhand Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (JRIDCL) has also conducted a survey. The findings from this survey have been shared with the Railway Board to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).
Gumla, Khunti, and Simdega will be connected to the existing Ranchi-Lohardaga rail line, a critical route in Jharkhand. Chatra, on the other hand, will be linked to the Ranchi-Hazaribagh rail route, as per the reports from India Today.
A Rail Milestone For Jharkhand
The connectivity plan for these new railway links in Jharkhand includes 55 km rail line from Lohardaga to Gumla, a 43 km rail line from Gumla to Simdega, a 20 km rail line from Hatia to Khunti, and a 42 km rail line from Hazaribagh to Chatra, India Today reports. This expansion will seamlessly improve Jharkhand’s existing railway network. It will certainly allow for smoother travel and goods transport across the state.
This project is a part of the Union government’s larger plan to improve eastern India’s railway system. According to reports from India Today, the Union Cabinet approved three major railway projects in August 2024 that will cost almost ₹6,500 crore in total. It consists of one multi-tracking project and two new rail lines spread over seven districts in four states: West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
These projects aim to improve the railway network in India.
