Opened by NGO Manav Sadhna in 2006, Seva Cafe in Ahmedabad is a unique restaurant not known for its striking ambiance or delicious food but for its concept of ‘pay it forward.’ Drawing inspiration from its name, this cafe promotes selfless service and social bonding. Unlike most restaurants, it has no fixed menu prices. Instead, visitors can have a meal and pay what they think is appropriate for people who will be visiting in the future. Nowadays, Seva Cafe is briefly shut down due to its process of relocation. Yet, its effect still moves people to take the same idea around the globe.
The ‘Pay It Forward’ Concept At Seva Cafe
Seva Cafe is not about food; it is about generosity and kindness. The whole place is operated by volunteers who cook and serve meals with love. When the guests finish their meal, they are given a note stating that their meal has already been paid for by the guest before them. They can then choose to cover the meal of the next guest, continuing the cycle of giving.
This concept has turned Seva Cafe into more than a restaurant—it is a model of charity. The hope is to create a sense of joy in people for giving with no expectation of receiving anything back.
Seva Cafe’s innovative model has been replicated across the world. One such example is Karma Kitchen in America, which works on the same ‘gift economy’ model. These cafes are based on trust, goodwill, and a perception that small acts of kindness have the power to create a ripple effect in society.
In addition to providing food, Seva Cafe also hosts community events, storytelling, and social action projects. It is determined to provide a space where people come together, share, and work for a greater cause.
Future Plans And Relocation
Currently, Seva Cafe is temporarily closed because of relocation. But its supporters eagerly await its return. Social media sites of the cafe continue to share news and stories of generosity, maintaining morale even without doors.
Seva Cafe shows that success does not necessarily come from sustenance, but from being an actual force for positive change in society. Whether you check out the cafe in person or adapt its philosophy with you in life, the concept of ‘paying it forward’ is a lovely reminder of the goodness of people.
