Arshad Warsi

The charming ‘Golmaal’ actor, Arshad Warsi, was in Goa to join our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, for this delightful episode of Tere Gully Mein. Filled with fun conversations, good food and hearty laughs, it was a wholesome episode. He shared all about how he signed up for his debut acting job in Bollywood. Scroll down to learn all about it.

Arshad Warsi Talked About His First Acting Job

Avid fans of Arshad Warsi know that he accidentally ended up working in the film industry. He was a professional choreographer. It wasn’t until 1996 that he debuted in a comedy-romance film, ‘Tere Mere Sapne,’ which changed his career trajectory.

Kamiya was curious to learn how he shifted his career path from being a choreographer to an actor back in the late 90s. The actor said, “Mine is the weirdest story ever! Joy Augustine, the director, comes home for a Saturday night party. I didn’t know him but he came with a friend of mine. I chatted and mingled with all the folks that day.”

It was only after two days that Joy approached him for a film. A sudden film offer to a skilled choreographer came as a surprise. Arshad honestly thought Joy was pulling his leg but the director assured him of the seriousness of this offer.

To our surprise, Arshad Warsi revealed that he declined his first acting job offer. The reason, as he stated, was, “The fear of failure was immense in my head. Living in Bombay, I have seen actors who have come, failed and are out in the street juggling jobs and my heart breaks for them.” There wasn’t an optimistic bone in him that urged him to try his luck and he ended up doubting himself.

Arshad continued to tell us more about his journey. He shared that Joy insisted he send some pictures for casting purposes. Arshad submitted some postcard-sized snapshots of him. He even got a callback from none other than Jaya Bachchan! On hearing the name “Jaya Bachchan,” Arshad was jolted out of his senses as he felt he had done something wrong.

Turns out, all she wanted to do was meet face-to-face with him! The only question she asked him was whether he could speak Hindi. A nervous Arshad Warsi could articulate a “yes, ma’am,” and was offered ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ then and there. He was still hesitant and again tried to pull out of the film but the universe clearly had other plans!
