Combating overtourism is the need of the hour across many regions in Italy. Venice introduced a day-tripper admission fee, and Florence banned self-check-in key boxes at rental properties. The latest to join these spots is Portofino, a coastal holiday destination in Italy. A fresh set of rules has hit this beach getaway, where barefoot walking and public drinking amongst other violations, will attract fines up to 500 euros (₹49,000 approx.).

Portofino Has Imposed New Rules For Summer Tourists

A report by Hindustan Times throws light on Portofino, which has grabbed a lot of limelight for its fresh new set of rules and regulations for tourists. The rules implemented on July 15 shall stay in place till September 30. What’s the reason for these rules? Well, the newly implemented rules will help the town manage overtourism concerns.

As the peak holiday season hits, Portofino is expecting a massive surge in tourism footfall. To protect the cultural integrity, maintain peace and tranquillity of the coastal nooks, a stream of seasonal fines will target acts coated in misdemeanour. These include strolling barefoot, consuming liquor in public spaces and having picnics outside of designated zones.

Barefeet Walking, Public Drinking, Swimwear Outside Lounge Areas To Attract Hefty Fines

The rules will be put in place for the purpose of conserving the Riviera haunt’s cultural integrity, peaceful vibes and aesthetic appeal from the hordes of tourists that will crowd the place each summer. Mayor Matteo Viacava signed this order that came into effect on July 15. Moreover, any tourist found violating these rules will be subjected to a fine ranging between 25 euros(₹2493 approx) to 500 euros(₹49,000 approx). This depends on the violation.

Consuming liquor in public spaces away from resto-bars and pubs will attract fines. Similarly, wearing swimwear away from lounge areas are also prohibited. Walking barefoot around the coastal areas of Portofino garner fines as well.

Having picnics in non-designated areas, roaming around public places with portable speakers or suitcases, sitting and lying on the pavements are not allowed as well. These new rules imposed will mainly apply to the harbour area and city centre of Portofino to ensure tourists and residents have a peaceful and relaxing space.
