People suffering from diabetes usually avoid eating sweet, sugary fruits as they can cause blood sugar spikes. But a recent study revealed that one sugary summer fruit, beloved in India can infact have the opposite impact on our health than what’s commonly believed. It actually lower diabetes risk, as per the study. Read on to know which fruit we are talking about.
Mangoes Can Lower Diabetes Risk
A study was published in the journal Nutrients by researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology. This study delved deep into how consuming fresh mangoes can affect inflammation and insulin sensitivity in obese and overweight adults having low-grade chronic inflammation. This study linked the sweet, sugary juicy summer fruit to lower insulin resistance which is a determining factor in preventing diabetes.
They compared consuming mangoes to having the same calorie content as Italian ice. This is a frozen, sweetened icy dessert like sorbet. The study was conducted on 48 people between the age group of 20-26 years. Apart from consuming an allotted amount of mango, which is two pre-portioned cups filled with mango pieces, per day, they were also directed to continue this regular diet and lifestyle.

Study Reveals Significant Reduction In Insulin Resistance
Interestingly, the participants who ate mangoes witnessed a “significant” reduction in insulin resistance. Moreover, the ability of the pancreas to produce and release insulin also improved. In just four weeks, the mango consumers noticed significantly lower insulin concentrations compared to the beginning of the study. Whereas the control group noticed no change in health.
Professor Indika Edirisinghe, the study leader stated that managing blood sugar is about improving insulin sensitivity. It’s not just about monitoring blood sugar levels. So, their study revealed that adding fresh mangoes to one’s diet is a simple way for obese adults and overweight people to reduce type 2 diabetes risk and support their insulin function better.
