There was a time when Indians just needed to switch on the fan to get relief from scorching hot summers. Now, due to the effects of climate change and global warming, a fan won’t suffice. So, air conditioners have become a summer necessity. Dr Shivdarshan, a professor from Haryana has a new eco-friendly invention for your homes that may remove the need for ACs in the future. He had invented cow-dung plasters and neem bricks that can keep homes 7-degrees cooler and even reduce the need for concrete that generates a significant carbon footprint. Here’s more on his stellar invention.
What Did The Professor Invent?
In an interview with The Better India, Dr Shivdarshan revealed that the use of concrete in buildings has a lifespan of 50 years. But after this, it just ends up as non-recycled construction debris that’s harmful to the environment. To find an eco-friendly solution to reduce carbon footprints in buildings, the professor invented Vedic Plaster and Gocrete Bricks. Both these are made from soil, cow dung and other natural, environmentally friendly materials. The entrepreneur stated that while people always calculate the value while constructing their houses, they should equally be concerned about the damage it’s causing to the environment.

What Was The Inspiration Behind His Invention?
Dr Shivdarshan worked as a professor at Murthal University in Sonipat. He later quit his job and became a consultant with IT-Delhi, World Bank and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). While working on a project that dabbled with sustainability, he noticed villagers plastering their houses with cow dung. The villagers stated that cow dung kept their homes cooler and worked as insulation during winters. That’s how the professor got the inspiration to prepare the Vedic Plaster made of soil, clay, neem leaves and cow dung. Vedic Plaster can replace the conventional concrete layer that smoothes out walls.

How Is Gocrete & Vedic Plaster Better Than Concrete Houses?
Now, if you’re wondering how the Vedic Plaster and his other invention, Gocrete is better than your usual concrete, then here’s how. Dr Shivdarshan explained to The Better India that Gocrete is an eco-friendly product made of cow dung and other natural materials. While concrete absorbs 30 per cent of heat, Gocrete Handmade Bricks prevent up to 70 per cent of the heat from entering your homes. So, this means cooler homes during sveltering summers. Similarly, Vedic Plaster also doesn’t absorb heat and can in fact keep your home 7 degrees cooler in summer. During winters, it acts as insulation and keeps you warm.
