If everything goes well, then UNESCO may soon give Visva-Bharati University in Kolkata a ‘heritage’ tag. This will make it the world’s first living heritage university. According to a report by the Indian Express, Bidyut Chakraborty, the Vice Chancellor of the university stated that the institution may soon be declared a heritage site. If this happens, then for the first time ever, a functioning university will receive a heritage tag.

The Legacy Of Tagore
This development comes after the cultural ministry made an appeal for the status of a UNESCO heritage site 11 years ago. The year of appeal also marked the 150 birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. For those who aren’t aware, this prestigious university was founded by the noble laureate, Rabindranath Tagore in 1921.

A Brief History Of The University
As mentioned above, Visva-Bharati University was founded by the first non-European noble laureate, Rabindranath Tagore film. Moreover, it was declared a central university and an institution of national importance by the Parliament Act of 1951. However, before this development, it served only as a college. Did you know that the first vice chancellor of this institution was Rathindranath Tagore, who was the son of this famed noble laureate? It’s no secret that Tagore believed in open-air education and so he introduced this system at the university, which is still prevalent.
