Three Children Dead & 37 Hospitalised Following Severe Food Poisoning Incident At Private Hostel In Andhra Pradesh

In a tragic incident, three children lost their lives, and 37 others were hospitalised due to food poisoning in Anakapalle, Andhra Pradesh. The unfortunate incident took place at a private hostel managed by the Aradhana Christian Trust in Kailasa Patnam, Kotavuratla Mandal, Anakapalle district. The affected children consumed snacks like samosas and biryani on Saturday, followed by rice and sambar for dinner that night.

The next day, the children began complaining of vomiting and uneasiness. The hostel management promptly informed the parents and sent the children home on Sunday. However, the situation worsened as the children fell severely ill upon reaching home. Many were rushed to hospitals in Anakapalle and Visakhapatnam districts. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, three children, identified as Jashuva, Bhavani, and Shradha, succumbed to the poisoning.

The Anakapalle Collector, Vijaya Krishnan, confirmed that 37 children are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The incident has shocked the local community, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.

YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and leader of the YSR Congress Party expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, reported Hindustan Times. He criticised the current government’s negligence, pointing out the apparent gaps in the monitoring systems meant to ensure the safety of children in such institutions.

Reddy demanded that the authorities provide the best possible medical care to the affected students. He also called for immediate support to the grieving families. Reddy urged the government to shift its focus from engaging in political propaganda. He emphasised the need for improving systems and taking preventive measures. Reddy insists that such incidents must never happen again. He stressed that authorities must take stringent actions to ensure the safety and well-being of children in hostels and other similar facilities.

The loss of young lives due to preventable causes like food poisoning is tragic. It underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations in institutions responsible for the care of children. More rigorous monitoring of these facilities is essential. Authorities plan to launch a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning and hold those responsible accountable.
